This problem has been bugging me for a long time - excessive CPU usage with gvfs-gdu-volume, udisks-daemon and dbus-daemon
I have had this problem on Lucid and Karmic - fresh installs.
Looks like it is down to my Optiarc ad-7640S DVD drive.
This command "fixes" the problem for me too:
