Re: No sound on Karmic. Any ideas?

I'm no Ubuntu expert, but I've had this problem twice, once when upgrading from 8.04 to Karmic 9.10, and again today when downgrading to Jaunty 9.04 (for other reasons). Both times, the root cause was the same.

Here's how I got my sound back (and it stayed):

1: Left click on the speaker icon that's in the upper right corner of my screen.

2: In the little window that opens up, left click "Volume Control".

3: In the volume control box, left click "Preferences" and add a check-mark to every single thing on the list that shows up, then close that little pop-up box.

4: Go across the tabs in the open Volume Control box and click on "Switches."

5: Remove the check-mark from "External Amplifier."

    6: Close all open boxes.

I'm not sure why this works, but it has worked twice now, so I thought I should share it.

    With thanks,
    -Ed.

Yeah, for some weird reason, Ubuntu decides it's best to automatically activate a connection to an external amplifier. That one has been around for a while.

The only one of our systems I've seen this bug on is the older Gazelles.

Unhappy karmic koala: system preferences/ windows/ titlebar action

This isn't working. I have it set to maximize window and it still does the default which is rollup and unrollup.

I like you all have the same no sound issue.

A previous post mentioned to disable the Modem Software Driver. When I try and do this I get a message that says "no proprietary drives are in use on this system."

    Is that bad you reckon?
